International Athlete Inspires Academy Pupils

Staff and pupils welcomed international athlete Rion Pierre to The Folkestone Primary Academy to take part in a workshop to coach and inspire pupils.  The Sports for Schools initiative is an athlete-led physical activities program to encourage children to take part in more sport and learn about healthy eating.  Rion’s visit started with all pupils taking part in a circuit training activity with four 1-minute exercises, including star jumps, squats, push ups and ski jumps.

Following the circuit activity the sprint athlete, who has competed in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m track events in the European Championships along with other prestigious competitions, held an assembly with pupils to listen to him talk about his own sporting experiences, his diet and training schedule and the lessons he has learned through his sporting career.  The morning finished with a collection of training demonstrations by Rion and a Q & A session with teachers and pupils.

Mrs Emily Opstad, a Senior Leader at Folkestone Primary Academy comments on the activities: “This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience!  The pupils really engaged with the morning’s circuit activities and listened intently to the inspiring story Rion told in the assembly.”
